The world's apathy to the plight of the Rohingya people is both infuriating and terrifying but no longer surprising. There's hundreds of examples where the world seems to indicate that one demographic somehow matters more even if we're all humans and life ought to be precious.
It's why we have people from all over adding France flag profile pictures in solidarity of an incident there (rightly) but there's not a peep about far worse things happening elsewhere, whether it's the same kind of terror (with far greater number of causalities) or horrific genocide being perpetrated under the watch of a Nobel Peace Prize winner (who is proving the award to be more farcical than even the time that Obama got it).
The world just doesn’t seem to care that an entire ethnic group is being wiped out. Is it that over years and years of crazy, one sided news cycles and media portrayal, we’ve somehow dehumanised the poor (or the religion) to the point that we are simply callous when such horrors happen to then? In the midst of this, India’s refusal to take in refugees and even forcing the ones who are here to leave is utterly appalling (all this while our great PM meets the now farcical Nobel winner).
I can’t help but feel a mixture of sorrow, anger, helplessness and overall a deep disappointment in our species. Where do we go from here? How much lower can we stoop? At what point do we wake up and ask the world (and ourselves) to care for humanity before we destroy ourselves over our differences?
